Minnesota Gophers land another BB walk-on

Minnesota had Jared Nuness as a basketball walk-on this year. The former Eden Prairie standout redshirted this season, but impressed the Gopher coaches with his outside shooting. Minnesota fans have known for some time that Ryan Saunders, son of former Gopher and current Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Flip, would walk-on next season. Goldensports.net learned that Minnesota will have another walk-on on their roster next season.

Alex Popp, a 6-foot-6 forward from Northfield (MA) Mount Hermon, averaged 5.6 points and 2.8 rebounds per game this season as he led the Hoggers (got to love that nickname) to a 19-7 mark. Popp led the team in three-pointers made and three-pointers attempted. He spent the prep school season at Mount Hermon after playing at Winchester (MA) High School, where he averaged 19.7 points, 6.2 assists and 4.8 rebounds per game as a senior.

Popp was named to the BABC Christmas Tourney All-Tournament team as he led his team to the championship with 38 points. Alex was named Middlesex League MVP and School Sports Magazine 2nd team All-State. He was named a McDonald's All-American Nominee and finished his career the second all-time leading scorer at Winchester. Popp spent his summer playing for Middlesex Magic AAU and attended the Adidas All-American camp.
