Gophers fall 7-1 to Fullerton in World Series

The Minnesota Gophers fell to Cal State Fullerton 7-1 in their opening game of the College World Series. They lost to the second seed host Titans and will face #1 seed Arizona State (40-17) in the loser's bracket game at 1:00. If they lose, their season is over. It they win, they will face the loser of Cal State Fullerton-Pepperdine at 9:00.

The Gophers were held to just five hits by Fullerton starter Jason Windsor, who improved to 9-4 with the win. He faced just 30 batters and struck out 11 with just one walk. All-American Glen Perkins gave up 10 hits and allowed seven runs, six of them earned. He struck out six batters.

The Titans started the scoring with one run in the bottom of the first. They added a second run to go 2-0. The Titans exploded for five runs in the sixth. Gopher catcher Jake Elder hit his seventh home run of the season for the Gophers' lone run in the eighth inning.

The Sun Devils entered the NCAA Tournament as the No. 7 national seed with a 40-16 overall record. Arizona State finished fourth in the Pac-10 with a 13-11 conference record. The Sun Devils dropped two of three at Stanford to end the regular season last week. Stanford won 5-0 and 10-3 in the first two games, and Arizona State claimed the series finale 15-5. The Sun Devils are led by Dustin Pedroia, who is batting .395 with 76 runs, nine homers and 48 RBI. Travis Buck leads the team in home runs (9) and RBI (56) and is batting .365 on the season. Josh Assanovich is batting .372 with five home runs and 40 RBI. Pitching wise, Arizona State is led by Jason Urquidez who is 11-3 with a 3.31 ERA and 90 strikeouts in 92.1 innings. Jeff Mouser is 6-4 with a 3.93 ERA. Zechry Zinicola is 4-2 with a 3.46 ERA and 52 strikeouts in 52 innings pitched. Minnesota and Arizona State have two common opponents in Florida State and Cal State Northridge. The Golden Gophers beat Cal State Northridge 12-6, while the Sun Devils won 13-3 against the Matadors. Arizona State also swept a three-game series at home against Florida State, while Minnesota defeated them 6-1 in a single game at the Metrodome. Arizona State owns a 5-1 advantage in the series, but Minnesota defeated the Sun Devils 14-5 in the two team's last meeting on Mar. 4, 1994 in the Oscar Meyer Classic at the Metrodome. The Golden Gophers lost to Arizona State 6-5 at Tempe, Ariz. in the NCAA Tournament on May 28, 1993 the year before.
