Walk-on K Joel Monroe talks to Goldensports.net

The Minnesota Gophers signed two kickers from Ohio in punter Justin Kucek of Canfield and Jason Giannini of Canton (OH) GlenOak and return standout Rhys Lloyd. However, that did not deter Joel Monroe of Robbinsale Cooper from walking on to the team this year. GoldenSports.net caught up with Monroe recently.

Joel Monroe is busy working on his kicking this summer. He told me that plans to attend private kicking camps in Des Moines and in Illinois.

Monroe, a former soccer player, did not get many opportunities for Cooper, who finished 0-9. However, 81% of his kickoffs went into the end zone.

Monroe received some interest from Wisconsin and Iowa, along with Division II Michigan Tech. He is an excellent student who graduated with a 4.058 GPA and a class ranking of eight out of 465. Monroe plans to major in engineering.

Monroe said that the strength to his kicking game is not either his accuracy or leg strength.

"That changes from year to year."

Monroe is not overly concerned with the competition among the kickers.

"They told me that the best kicker plays. Everyone wants to field the best team."

Monroe is hopping that someday that the best team will feature him as the Gopher kicker.
