Joey Shaw catches Gophers' recruiting interest

Joey Shaw is a 6-6, 160-pound shooting guard from Chandler, Arizona, but Shaw is in the process of moving and will be playing for Deer Valley in Glendale this fall. He is hearing from many Pac 10 schools as well as Minnesota. Mike Fetters from the Washington Insiders site caught up with Shaw on the latest on his recruitment.

The only moving Shaw is interested in right now is moving his Arizona Magic Blue team closer to a championship trophy at the Reebok Big Time tournament.

AMB had a 17-point lead against Stamford (CT) Express, but won on a buzzer-beater by Raymond Murdock. Saturday night they beat Play Hard Play Smart 79-70 to continue to advance to face the Portland Panthers Red AAU team at 1 p.m..

"Hopefully we'll have about 5 or 6 more games we play," Shaw told Saturday. AMB started out this summer at the Bob Gibbons tournament in North Carolina, came back to Vegas, then to Houston and then to Los Angeles early last week for the Pangos Full-Court Press.

"I can play almost any position except for the 5," Joey said when asked about his game. "I can dribble, have a great shot and am always looking to pass. I don't shoot all that much. I need to work on my strength and quickness. If I get a little quicker I'll be alright."

And recruiting? "It's been going really good," he said. "Right now, Washington, Minnesota, Oregon State, USC, ASU, Kansas, Nebraska and Michigan State are showing the most interest."

Shaw claims offers from USC, Washington, Minnesota, Oregon State, Arizona State and Nevada. He doesn't know who he'll visit yet but plans on taking official visits before he commits anywhere.

Any leaders? "Nope, not yet," said Shaw.
