Minnesota ranked 23rd in ESPN/USA Today poll

The Gophers football team made the top 25 in the most widely referenced preseason poll.

The Big Ten looked strong as ESPN/USA Today released their official Preseason Coaches Poll. Six Big Ten teams were ranked in the preseason top-25, including two in the top 10.

Michigan was ranked highest at No. 7, Ohio State came in at No. 9, Iowa at No. 12, arch-rival Wisconsin at No. 22. The Gophers were just behind at No. 23, tied with Purdue for that spot.

Two other conference teams also received votes, Michigan State garnered 16 votes and Penn State had two.

The Gophers' regular-season schedule includes ranked teams Michigan at the Big House Oct. 9, Iowa at home in the season finale Nov. 13, and Wisconsin at Camp Randall Nov. 6. The Gophers avoid ranked teams Ohio State and Purdue.

After several seasons of consistent improvement under Coach Glen Mason, the football Gophers have high expectations this season. But it will be anything but a cakewalk to the conference title and a Rose Bowl berth considering the strength of the Big Ten conference.
