One-time walk-on candidate Vinny Flury now at UMD

Wide receiver Vinny Flury of Lakeville (MN) High, a one-time Gopher football recruited walk-on candidate, has landed at UMD after accepting a scholarship offer from the Air Force. Flury, a 5-9, 175-pounder, helped lead the Panthers to a 14-0 mark and the Class 5A championship. He decided that the Air Force was not the right place for him, leaving his scurrying for a new school.

Vinny Flury checked into walking-on with the Gophers, but it was too late as they had landed several other walk-ons. Flury had visited Minnesota in February, but a scholarship offer from the Air Force swayed his decision. Flury had been offered a scholarship by UMD, but by the time that he had changed his mind about the Air Force, the Bulldogs no longer had a scholarship available. He is walking-on as a freshman with the hopes of landing a scholarship next season. UMD is moving from the Northern Sun to the tougher North Central Conference.

Flury caught two touchdown passes in the Prep Bowl to lead the Panthers in a 34-9 win over Hastings. He finished the season with 78 receptions for 1,198 yards and 18 receiving touchdowns this season. Flury had 13 carries for 144 yards, two rushing touchdowns and one punt return for a score. He also led the state in receptions as a junior with 60 grabs.

The Panthers cruised through the regular season. They outscored their opposition 545-178 in their 14 games.

Flury scored a 22 on his ACT and has a 3.4 GPA. He plans to major in business or business finance.
