The Big Ten did not fare as well in the Sports Illustrated college football preview as it did in the ESPN/USA today poll, where six Big Ten schools placed in the top 25 (with Michigan clocking in at No. 7 overall).
This time only four Big Ten schools were ranked, the highest being Ohio State coming in at No. 8. The Buckeyes leapfrogged Michigan at 12, followed by Iowa at 15 and Minnesota alone at 23.
Gopher swimmer Justin Mortimer won four individual national titles and the Kiphuth Award for high points at nationals.
Disappointed about not making the Olympic team, Mortimer refocused himself on winning five national titles. He won four of the five events he entered, taking ninth in the 400-meter freestyle. Even though he posted the single fastest time in the 400 free, a bad swim in a preliminary kept him from a shot at a title sweep.
Gopher notes: Minnesota 23rd in another poll
