Burnsville FB/LB James Ruffin attracts interest

James Ruffin, a 6-3, 233-pound fullback/linebacker of Burnsville (MN) High, is considered one of the top prospects in the state. He attended Northwestern's "Junior Day" and the Gophers' basketball game versus Illinois. GoldenSports.Net recently caught up with Ruffin to find out the latest on his recruitment.

James Ruffin finished second on the Blaze in rushing with 97 carries for 381 yards. He scored seven touchdowns for the Blaze, who finished 4-5. Long-time head coach Jay Anderson retired in the offseason and former South St. Paul head coach Paul Miller has taken over. The Blaze will open their season against nearby rival Apple Valley on Friday.

Ruffin played for the Blaze basketball team as a reserve. They finished runner-up in Class AAAA, losing to Lake Conference rival Chaska 71-57 in the title game and finished the season 27-5.

What is the latest on schools that you are hearing from?

"Ball State, Minnesota, North Dakota State, Iowa State and Iowa. That's about it for now."

I know that it is early, but have any schools offered you yet?

"Not yet."

How is the new head-coaching situation affecting your role with the team?

"It has not really affected it. Coach Miller pretty much knew what I could do. I am playing defense a bit this year. I'll probably start at middle linebacker and fullback."

How does his style of offense affect the number of carries you will likely receive?

"The fullback is a big part of the offense. It is an option offense, but I don't think that it will affect my carries at all, really."

Have you visited any campuses at all?

"I visited Iowa and Minnesota. Iowa State toured me around the campus."

What camps did you attend?

"I went to the Nike camp in Iowa City."

Are you planning on playing basketball again this season?

"Yes."
