Gopher FB recruits look good in season opener

Friday night was the season opener for many Minnesota high school teams. Several Minnesota recruits shined in their first game of the 2004 season. The following is a look at some of the performances by Minnesota commitments or recruiting targets.

Marcel Jones threw for three touchdowns, but it was not enough as Simley fell to Richfield 56-22. Jones, who was the first player to commit to the Gophers this year, threw scores of 2, 30 and 14 yards.

 

Gopher verbal Jay Thomas of Oakdale (MN) Tartan scored two touchdowns to lead the Titans to a 33-13 win over Henry Sibley. Thomas scored on 77- and 50-yard runs.

 

Gopher commitment Eric Decker of Cold Springs (MN) Rocori caught seven passes for 71 yards and had five rushes for 44 yards in a 26-13 win over Willmar.

 

Gopher commitment Nate Triplett of Delano (MN) High scored on 63- and 36-yard runs as he led the Tigers to a 54-3 win over Holy Family Catholic.

 

Joey Hiben of Waconia scored two touchdowns in their opening 49-14 win over Mound-Westonka. Hiben, who is considering the Gophers along with favorite Notre Dame, scored on 74- and 22-yard runs.

 

Athletic Reggie Rock of St. Paul (MN) Cretin Derham Hall threw for one touchdown as the Raiders defeated St. Thomas Academy 34-0. Rock, who is getting looks from Florida, Florida State, Minnesota, Miami, Michigan, Notre Dame and Wisconsin, completed a 20-yard pass to junior wide receiver Kimuel Royston, who also caught a 34-yard touchdown pass.

 

Zach Larsen of Northfield scored two touchdowns to lead the Raiders to a 42-0 over St. Paul Johnson. He rushed three times for eleven yards and had a two and six-yard scores in the easy win.

Gopher verbal Eric Decker of Cold Springs (MN) Rocori had 7 catches for 71 yards and rushed the ball five times for 45 yards in a 26-13 win over Willmar.

Chris Mensen of Solon (IA) High lead the Spartans to a 27-20 over Mt. Vernon in their season opener. Mensen helped running back Clint Donovan rush 34 times for 227 yards. Solon rushed for 272 yards in the win. Solon finished 12-2 last season as they finished runner-up in Class AA, losing to 14-0 Emmetsburg
