Woodbury T Tony Holmes attracts Midwest attention

Tony Holmes, a 6-foot-6 offensive tackle from Woodbury (MN) High, has a familiar name to many Gopher fans. His father, Gary, played basketball for the Gophers from 1978-82. "Cookie" was a sixth-round draft pick by the Detroit Pistons after his college career and has lived in the Twin Cities since his playing days ended. GoldenSports.Net caught up with Tony to learn the latest on his recruitment.

Tony Holmes is getting interest from Minnesota, Texas A&M., Iowa State and Michigan State. He has yet to receive an offer and admits that his visits plans are "iffy" at the moment. Holmes plans to make several visits after the season.

Woodbury lost to White Bear Lake Friday to fall to 2-3 overall and 1-3 in the Suburban West Conference.

Holmes also plays basketball and throws the shot and discus. He plans to play both sports this season. He missed the track season last year, due to an injury.

Holmes plans to attend tonight's Gopher game and has been at two of their first three games.

He admits that playing at Minnesota would be appealing, especially since his father attended there.

"I'd like to play there," he said.

Holmes bench presses 270 pounds and has run a 5.5 40-yard dash. He has a 2.93 GPA and had a 19 on his ACT. Gopher assistant Vic Adamle is responsible for recruiting Holmes.
