Defenseman Judd Stevens Named Gopher Captain

Senior defenseman Judd Stevens has been named captain for the 2004-05 edition of Golden Gopher men's hockey by a vote of his teammates. Serving as assistant captains this season will be senior forwards Jake Fleming and Barry Tallackson, and junior defenseman Chris Harrington.

Judd Stevens becomes the first defenseman to wear the 'C' since two-time All-American and 2002 Hobey Baker award winner Jordan Leopold served as captain for the 2001-02 season. Stevens replaces Grant Potulny, who was Minnesota's captain the past two years and an assistant captain in 2001-02.

Stevens, a native of Wayzata, has played in a team-high 131 games during his career. He has missed only five games in his career and owns totals of seven goals and 26 assists. A solid stay-at-home defenseman, Stevens is a three-time U of M Scholar-Athlete and a two-time member of the WCHA All-Academic Team. He is a finance major in the Carlson School of Management.

Stevens and the seventh-ranked Golden Gophers (2-1-0) head to No. 2 North Dakota this weekend to open their WCHA season on Friday-Saturday, Oct. 22-23, in Grand Forks, N.D.
