Mahtomedi Tackle Andy Franta Gets Gopher Interest

Andy Franta, a 6-foot-8, 265-pound offensive tackle and defensive end from Mahtomedi (MN) High, has helped lead the Zephyrs to a 10-0 mark and an appearance in the Class 4A, Section 3 versus South St. Paul Friday night. Franta has attended several Minnesota Gopher football games and caught the Gopher basketball contest versus Michigan State last winter. Golden Sports.Net caught up with Franta after Mahtomedi's 36-9 win over Simley in second round action.

Andy Franta is hearing from Division I schools Wyoming, Wisconsin and Minnesota along with Columbia, Northern Iowa, North Dakota and North Dakota State.

He has taken an unofficial visit to North Dakota State and has been to Minnesota "a few times."

Franta has a 3.1 GPA and posted a 23 on his ACT. He said that he would like to major in forestry or natural resources.

Franta said that North Dakota State is his favorite right now. They have a forestry program and could offer him a scholarship.

"It sounds like they are close to offering. Minnesota has a whole section on forestry, but an offer is a little ways away. Minnesota is a nice place. I like their facilities a lot."

Mahtomedi head coach Wally Malstrom said that Franta is a key to the Zephyrs' strong rushing attack.

"He is quick and agile. He does a good job of blocking and pulling. We will flip flop him on the offensive line. He does a good job of leading our 5-7, 165-pound wingback."

Franta helped lead the Zephyr rushing game as they gained 221 yards against Simley on 45 carries. Mahtomedi has rushed for 2,176 yards as a team and has averaged five yards per carry. The Zephyrs have four players who have rushed for more than 400 yards in Dustin Wahl (730 yards), Brad Foss (461), Marko Zitzer (426) and James Rogers (411).

Franta also had five tackles against Simley.

Franta said that most schools are looking at him as an offensive tackle. He said that it will not be too difficult to give up playing both sides of the field.

"No, I just started playing defense in the 10th grade."

Franta runs a 5.1 40-yard dash and bench presses 265 pounds. He is being recruited by Gopher assistant Moe Ankeny. The Gophers are also looking at Franta's teammate Troy Evangelist.
