Troy Evangelist Attracts Division I Attention

Troy Evangelist, a 6-foot-7, 230-pound tight end and defensive end from Mahtomedi (MN) High, emerged as a prospect on the Gophers' watch list. Evangelist led the Zephyrs to an 9-1 record and a Classic Suburban championship title. They lost to South St. Paul 30-6 in the Class AAAA Section 3 Finals. Evangelist was recently named second-team All-Metro by the Minneapolis Star Tribune. GoldenSports.net recently found out the latest on Evangelist's recruitment.

Troy Evangelist has caught 20 passes for 321 yards and five touchdowns. He caught four passes for 50 yards, including a 9-yard score in their 21-13 win over St. Thomas Academy.

Head coach Wally Malstrom had nothing but good things to say about one of his captains.

"He is very athletic. He is a good receiver who does a good job at fighting off blockers. He makes acrobatic catches. He is very likeable and leads our team in sacks."

Evangelist said that his strengths are blocking and catching the ball.

Evangelist was also nominated and made the Minnesota Vikings All-State team, which will be announced during half-time of Sunday's Viking game versus Jacksonville.

Purdue, which had received a commitment from Waconia tight end Joey Hiben, only to see him later commit to Notre Dame, has expressed interest in Evangelist and has requested that he come for an official visit in December.

Ohio and Michigan coaches have been calling him, and Columbia made an in-school visit and has done a financial plan with his family.

The Iowa Hawkeyes have been sending him information as have Division II programs North and South Dakota.

Evangelist is the Mahtomedi basketball team captain this season. The Zephyrs finished 8-19 last season, losing to North Branch in the Class AAA, Section 6 first round.

Evangelist scored a 27 on the ACT and has a 3.6 GPA. He is not sure of a major, but electrical engineering is a possibility.

Evangelist is being recruiting by Minnesota assistant Moe Ankney.
