Minnesota Falls To Florida State 70-69 At Home

Florida State went on a 16-0 run as it overcame a 63-49 deficit to knock off Minnesota 70-69 at Williams Arena as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The Gophers were led in scoring by JC transfer Vincent Grier, who has paced the team in scoring four of the first five games, with 23 points.

Minnesota jumped out to a 18-10 lead as Vincent Grier scored 13 points, including his first three three-pointers of the season.

Aaron Robinson made a three-pointer to expand the lead to 34-22. The Gophers led 41-32 after Dan Coleman's jumper. However, the Seminoles scored the last six points of the half to cut the margin to 41-38 at the break.

Both teams had the hot shooting hands in the first half. The Gopher made 8 of 12 (66.7%) three-pointers in the first half and 16 of 29 (55.2%) shots from the field. The Seminoles' hot shooting allowed them to stay in the game as they made 15 of 23 (65.2%) of their shots. Grier led all scorers with 13 in the first half as he made five of seven from the field and all three three-pointers. Dan Coleman added nine points for the Gophers.

Grier made a three-point play and jumper to expand the margin to 59-47. Rico Tucker stole the ball on the defensive end and his layup made the score 63-49 with 7:29 left in the game.

However, Von Wafer, Al Thornton and Todd Galloway scored the next 16 points for Florida State as they took their first lead at 65-63 since 2-0.

Jeff Hagen made two free throws to tie the score at 65-65. Von Wafer made a three-pointer from the top of the key to make it 68-65. Grier made one of two free throws to cut the margin to 68-66. Thornton made a layup with 13.3 seconds left to make the score 70-66. Aaron Robinson made a three-pointer from the left corner with 4.8 seconds remaining to cut the lead to one point. Thornton missed the front end of a one-and-one, but Brent Lawson missed a halfcourt shot at the buzzer.

The Gopher made just 10 of 30 (33.3%) from the field and 2 of 9 (22.2%) from beyond the arc in the second half and had eight turnovers compared to only three assists.

Wafer led the Seminoles with 19 points as he made 6 of 10 shots from the field and 3 of 5 from beyond the arc. Thornton made 6 of 8 shots off the bench as he finished with 12 points. Galloway had 10 points.

Grier led all scorers with 23 points. Coleman added 14 points. Grier and Coleman combined to shoot just 5 of 15 from the field in the second half. Aaron Robinson made three three-pointers as he had 11 points and Rico Tucker finished with 10 points and four steals.
