Hockey Teams Still No. 1

A home and home sweep of St. Cloud State extends the Gopher men's lead in the hockey polls. The women split in hockey, but still remain on top of the polls.

For the third consecutive week, the Minnesota Golden Gopher hockey team is ranked No. 1 in both the USCHO.com/CSTV Division I Men's Poll and the USA TODAY/USA Hockey Magazine Top 15 Men's Hockey Poll with 36/40 and 29/34 first-place votes, respectively.

Colorado College is in second, followed by Michigan, and border rival Wisconsin dropped from second to fourth.

Minnesota is in the midst of a school-record 18-game home winning streak. They are 7-0-0 at Mariucci Arena this season. Minnesota beat the Huskies 2-1 with a Jake Flemming overtime goal at the 2:21 mark of overtime on Friday. Saturday they returned home to Mariucci and posted a 4-2 victory to close out the weekend.

The Gopher women are also still No. 1 in the USCHO.com Division I Women's Poll, having split this weekend with previously undefeated Dartmouth. The USA Today women's poll has not yet been published. Minnesota lost 7-5 on Saturday and won 4-3 on Sunday in OT. Minnesota won the game in the last minute of overtime on a dramatic short-handed goal by captain Kelly Stephens to earn revenge for the previous evening's loss and earn the split.
