Gopher Volleyball Team Advances to NCAA Title Game

The fourth-seeded Minnesota Gopher volleyball team got a bit of revenge as they knocked off defending champion and No. 8 seed USC in four sets. The Gophers won 30-25, 29-31, 30-26 and 30-20. They will face No. 11 Stanford, which defeated Pac-10 rival Washington in the other semifinal Saturday night, for the NCAA Title.

Minnesota had lost to USC in last year's NCAA Tournament semifinals and a five-game match to USC in this year's NACWAA Classic championship on Aug. 28.

Minnesota played Stanford in the 2002 NACWAA Classic championship at Minneapolis. The Cardinal won that match in four games. The Golden Gophers ended up in Stanford for the regionals later that year. The Cardinal advanced to the Final Four, while Minnesota lost to Arizona in the NCAA Regional Semifinals. The Golden Gophers were in the same regional with Stanford in Long Beach last year. However, this time Stanford was upended by Washington in the regional semifinals as Minnesota advanced to the Final Four.
