Ex-Gopher Steven Watson Has Division I-AA Success

Recruiting is an inexact science. Steven Watson from St. Charles (Missouri) Francis Howell, was expected to be one of the Gophers' top recruits in 2000. However, things did not pan out for the linebacker prospect. He redshirted as a freshman and was suspended from the team after being charged with first- and third-degree sexual assault along with teammate Mackenzy Toussaint. GoldenSports.Net will look at some of the former Gopher recruits and where they are now.

University policy called for athletes to be automatically suspended if arrested or charged with sexual misconduct or domestic abuse. Steven Watson was found not guilty and transferred to Southwest Missouri State.

Watson led Southweest Missouri State in sacks with five and tackles for loss with 21 for 67 yards in 2002. He paced the team in sacks and was second in tackles and was named second-team All-Gateway in 2003 as a junior.

This season, Watson finished third on the Bears in tackles. He led the team in tackles for losses as a senior and was first-team All-Gateway as the Bears put together a 6-5 season and finished fourth in the league at 3-4. Watson entered Minnesota as 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds and has bulked up to 225 pounds.
