Alex Daniels Commits to Big Ten

Ohio athlete Alex Daniels (6-2, 225, 4.5, Scout.com's #15 safety, 4 stars) committed to Minnesota earlier today over Ohio State and Oklahoma. Daniels visited Minnesota along with teammates Keith Massey and Dominic James on Dec. 10 and had visited Oklahoma Dec. 17.

Alex Daniels scored two touchdowns on five carries to lead the Bearcats to a 42-21 win over Avon Lake in the Division II state championship. He also had five solo tackles and two assisted tackles. Daniels had one tackle for loss, a fumble recovery and a pass breakup in the win. The Bearcats finished the season 15-0.

"This is a 100 percent commitment for me. I'm sick of the recruiting process -- it's over," says Daniels, from Columbus Brookhaven. "And I will not be taking any more official visits.

"I called Minnesota and spoke with coach (Glen) Mason today. I just felt it was time to start my own path and make my own legacy there. A lot of people were telling me to go to both Ohio State and Oklahoma. But I just wanted to make my own decision.

"I think Minnesota is going to have a great program next year and that's why I wanted to commit there.

"I've already notified the coaches at Ohio State, but I couldn't get in touch with the coaches at Oklahoma yet. No one there could answer the phone.

"I'll be playing linebacker at Minnesota. The coaches there were very happy and everything. They thought that I was going to end up at Ohio State because it's like 10 minutes away.

"I really don't think the coaches at either Ohio State or Oklahoma are still going to be on me.

"I've got a good opportunity to go in and play as a freshman at Minnesota with the abilities that I have. I could get some quality minutes there.

"The coaches there are going to try and teach me on the go, as opposed to what I might have experienced at Ohio State or Oklahoma -- learning their different systems and not being able to play.

"My commitment to Minnesota fits in perfectly with what I want to do as a player. My main reason for going with them was the chance to play early.

"I just had an in-home visit with coach (Mitch) Browning (tight ends and tackles) today. It was the third time he's been to my house. I really enjoyed it. It was cool.

"Minnesota is on the verge of being a great team. They just need more dedicated players on defense."
