Gopher Signee Kevin Payton Named To All-Star Game

Kevin Payton, a 6-6 wing player from Camden (NJ) High who signed with Minnesota in the early signing period, was named to the U.S. All-Star roster for the 32nd annual Capital Classic. The 2005 version of the event will be played on April 22 at George Mason University, marking the first time the game has been played in Virginia. The night begins at 6 p.m. with the District versus Suburban All-Stars and is followed by the main event, the Capital All-Stars squaring off against the U.S. All-Stars.

Kevin Payton transferred to Camden after previously being in Austria, where his father played professional basketball. Payton was invited to the Nike All-American Camp in Indianapolis this summer but did not play due to an injury.

Payton was hampered by the stomach flu in their season-ending 76-58 loss in the NJSIAA Group 3 state boys' basketball final to Shabazz at Rutgers. He was held to just eight points in the loss, 14 below his scoring average. Camden finished the season 18-5. He missed seven games with a dislocated shoulder.

Payton scored 51 points as he led the Panthers past host Camden County Tech 120-55 earlier this season.
