Gopher Alex Popp will Transfer to Assumption

Alex Popp, a 6-foot-6 freshman walk-on forward for Minnesota, will transfer to Assumption, a Division II school in Worcester, Massachusetts. Popp played in just five games this season and averaged 0.6 points and 0.4 rebounds per game.

Alex Popp, a 6-foot-6 forward who played prep school at Northfield (MA) Mount Hermon, was expected to provide outside shooting for the Gophers. However, with Minnesota having a better than expected season, including making the NCAA Tournament, Popp was unable to get much of an opportunity on the floor.

Popp will transfer to Assumption, which is about 40 minutes from his Winchester home. Assumption stuggled last season, finishing just 4-23. The Greyhounds play in the Northeast 10 Conference.

Popp averaged 5.6 points and 2.8 rebounds per game at Mount Hermon as he led the Hoggers (got to love that nickname) to a 19-7 mark. Popp led the team in three-pointers made and three-pointers attempted. He spent the prep school season at Mount Hermon after playing at Winchester (MA) High School, where he averaged 19.7 points, 6.2 assists and 4.8 rebounds per game as a senior.

Popp was named to the BABC Christmas Tourney All-Tournament team as he led his team to the championship with 38 points. Alex was named Middlesex League MVP and School Sports Magazine Second-Team All-State. He was named a McDonald's All-American Nominee and finished his career the second all-time leading scorer at Winchester. Popp spent his summer playing for Middlesex Magic AAU and attended the Adidas All-American camp.
