Andy Brinkhaus Becomes First Gopher FB Commitment

Andy Brinkhaus, a 6-foot-3, 257-pound offensive tackle from Bloomington (MN) Jefferson, has become the first player to commit to Minnesota. Brinkhaus is the younger brother of Tony, who is expected to vie for a starting spot this season. He lead Jefferson to an 8-2 mark, losing to eventual state champion Minnetonka in the second round of the Class AAAAA, Section 2 quarterfinals.

Andy Brinkhaus attended the Minnesota football camp this past week. He was measured with a 23-1/2 inch vertical. Brinkhaus is coached by former Gopher Jon Leverenz, who is high on his offensive lineman.

"Andy is a very good drive blocker that can really move a pile," said Leverenz. "He has very good toughness, and he moves well for his size."

Brinkhaus is the first Gopher commitment for the 2006 season. The Gophers have offered six other in-state players.

Older brother Tony Brinkhaus redshirted during the 2003 season and backed up Joe Ainslie at right tackle this past season. Tony participated in 194 plays last season and will vie for a starting spot this season.
