Gophers Shine in Howard Pulley Summer League

The current Minnesota Gophers and newcomers are busy working on their basketball skills in individuals settings and weekly scrimmages. They are also playing in the Howard Pulley Summer League. The Howard Pulley League features eight teams and the playoffs are finishing up this week. Several Gopher players shined in last night's games and was there to catch the action.

Escape/Bellanotte defeated TRP 102-97 in overtime, despite 39 points and six three-pointers from Lawrence McKenzie, who will sit out the 2005-06 season after transferring from Oklahoma. TRP was eliminated from playoffs with their second postseason loss.

J'Son Stamper, who has demonstrated a much improved outside game, had 27 points. Dan Coleman, who has had an excellent outside shooting summer, added 26 points. Aaron Robinson, who finished his Gopher career this season, finished with 17 points

McKenzie hit several deep three-pointers to allow TRP to rally from a late seven-point deficit. Josh Vaughan, who played for Class AA state champion Braham, hit a three-pointer in the closing seconds to force overtime. Gopher walk-on Jamal Abu-Shamala added 10 points. They were without Jonathan Williams and Spencer Tollackson, which hurt their inside game. Escape will play First Equity tonight at 8:45, with the loser eliminated. The winner will advance to face the winner of Orenstein/Rose versus A&A Millwork. Those two teams are undefeated and can lose once and still win the championship game.

First Equity defeated Errol Carlstrom Playaz 94-91 in the second game of the evening. Former Gopher Mitch Ohnstad, who serves as a player-coach scored 17 points in the loss and Mike Bauer added 15 points.

The two Howard Pulley 16-and-under AAU teams will face off Wednesday at 7:00 and the 17-and-under teams will meet Thursday at 7:00.
