Waconia Guard Sam Sterner Gets Midwest Interest

Sam Sterner, a 6-foot-4, 258-pound guard from Waconia (MN) High, attended the Minnesota Gopher scrimmage Saturday. Sterner is considered one of the top linemen in the state. He attended the Gopher Junior Day in February and their team camp in June. GoldenSports.net caught up with Sterner to find the latest on his recruitment.

Sam Sterner had a busy summer as he attended the Nike training camp in Athens, Georgia and attended several summer camps.

Sterner attended Indiana, Minnesota, Iowa State, Michigan State, Wisconsin, St. Cloud State and South Dakota State camps and visited Wyoming and North Dakota State on their senior days.

Waconia had a disappointing 2-7 season last year, despite also having Joey Hiben, who signed with Notre Dame on their roster.

They open the season at Big Lake Friday and face Mound Westonka (whom they defeated 49-14 in their home opener last season) Sept. 9 in their home opener.

Sterner also plays center on the school's basketball team that finished 22-4, losing to Benilde St. Margaret in the Section 5, Class AAA quarterfinals.

Sterner also puts the shot and discus and threw 40-5 1/2 in the shot and 100 feet in the discus in the sectionals.

Sterner is up to 258 pounds after weighing 247 pounds at the Minnesota football camp. He says that the teams are looking at him as an offensive guard.

Sterner has yet to receive an offer, but said that St. Cloud State might offer him soon.
