Orono DE Sean McWhirter Has Three Offers

Sean McWhirter, a 6-foot-3, 250-pound defensive end from Long Lake (Minn.) Orono, received a Minnesota Gopher offer in March and has gotten plenty of Midwest interest. McWhirter had 113 tackles, 16 tackles for loss and 10 sacks as a junior. He was named all-conference, defensive MVP, All-State honorable mention as a junior as he led the Spartans in tackles as they finished 5-4. GoldenSports.net caught up with his mother, Pam, to find out the latest on this talented defensive standout.

Sean McWhirter has received scholarship offers from Minnesota, Colorado State and Iowa State, according to his mother, Pam.

McWhirter starts his senior season at Orono Thursday, which opens its season at home versus Farmington.

Pam said that Sean attended camps at Minnesota, Iowa State, Iowa, Northwestern and Purdue. He also attended a team camp at South Dakota. McWhirter had hoped to attend camp at Notre Dame and Nebraska, but was unable to, due to a hectic summer which included a week at a church camp. McWhirter was also slowed this summer by an injury suffered during track season.

McWhirter threw the shot put and discus and ran the 100- and 400-yard dash and competed on the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relay this past season.

Pam said that her son would like to take some visits before making his college choice. She said that he plans to go to as many college games as he can.

She said that Iowa State invited him to come down for a game and Michigan State has also extended an invitation. However, it might be tough since Orono has films and weight lifting every Saturday, which would be tough to miss since he is a team captain.

McWhirter is expected to attend the Minnesota-Colorado State at the Metrodome Sept. 10, especially since both teams have offered him a scholarship.

McWhirter is undecided about a college major, but is considering business or criminal justice.
