First BCS Standings to be Released Monday

The first BCS Standings of the college football season will be released Monday, October 17th. They will be released each Monday through November 28. The standings will be posted to the BCS website: The final BCS Standings of the 2005 season will be released on Sunday, December 5 at 5:00 p.m. ET. The first release could bring better than expected news for Gopher fans -- provided that they beat Wisconsin this Saturday.

Six computer rankings will be used for the 2005 BCS standings. They are Jeff Sagarin, Anderson & Hester, Richard Billingsley, Colley Matrix, Kenneth Massey and Dr. Peter Wolfe.

A team's highest and lowest computer ranking will be discarded from figuring a team's computer poll average. Points will be assigned in inverse order of ranking from 1-25. The four remaining computer scores will be averaged and the total will be calculated as a percentage of 100.

All three components — The Harris Interactive Poll, the USA Today Coaches Poll and the computer rankings — shall be added together and averaged for a team's ranking in the BCS standings. The team with the highest average shall rank first in the BCS standings.

Jeff Sagarin has Minnesota ranked #8. Anderson & Hester ranks the Gophers #12, Richard Billingsley has the Gophers #23, Colley Matrix ranks Minnesota #9, Kenneth Massey has the Gophers #11 and Dr. Peter Wolfe ranks Minnesota #14. If you threw out the highest ranking of #8 and lowest ranking of #23, the Gophers would have a computer ranking of 11.5.

The Gophers are ranked #22 in both the Harris Interactive Poll and the USA Today Coaches Poll.
