Waconia Guard Sam Sterner Gets First Offer

Sam Sterner, a 6-foot-4, 258-pound guard from Waconia (MN) High, attended the Minnesota Gopher game versus Wisconsin Saturday. Sterner is considered one of the top linemen in the state. He attended the Gopher Junior Day in February and their team camp in June and has been at all four Minnesota home games this season. GoldenSports.net caught up with Sterner to find the latest on his recruitment and learned about his first scholarship offer.

Sam Sterner had a busy summer as he attended the Nike training camp in Athens, Georgia and attended several summer camps.

Sterner attended Indiana, Minnesota, Iowa State, Michigan State, Wisconsin, St. Cloud State and South Dakota State camps and visited Wyoming and North Dakota State on their senior days.

Sterner received a scholarship offer from Wyoming and took an unofficial visit there last weekend agianst TCU. Sterner said that he has also recently heard from TCU and Columbia.

Waconia had a disappointing 2-7 season last year, despite also having Joey Hiben, who signed with Notre Dame, on their roster.

They defeated Watertown-Mayer 27-7 to bounce back from three straight defeats as the Wildcats improved to 4-3.

Sterner also plays center on the school's basketball team that finished 22-4, losing to Benilde-St. Margaret in the Section 5, Class AAA quarterfinals.

Sterner also puts the shot and discus and threw 40-5 1/2 in the shot and 100 feet in the discus in the sectionals.

Sterner is up to 258 pounds after weighing 247 pounds at the Minnesota football camp. He says that the teams are looking at him as an offensive guard.
