MN DE Sean McWhirter Adds Big 10 Offer

Sean McWhirter, a 6-foot-3, 250-pound defensive end from Long Lake (Minn.) Orono, received a Minnesota Gophers offer in March and has gotten plenty of Midwest interest. McWhirter received another Big Ten offer this week and has set an official visit with hometown Minnesota. He attended the Minnesota-Michigan State game Saturday.

Sean McWhirter lead Orono to an 8-2 mark this season. They have won eight straight games after dropping the season opener to undefeated Farmington before falling to New Prague 7-6 in the Section finals.

McWhirter had 113 tackles, 16 tackles for loss and 10 sacks as a junior. He was named all-conference, defensive MVP, All-State honorable mention as a junior as he led the Spartans in tackles as they finished 5-4.

McWhirter attended camps at Minnesota, Iowa State, Iowa, Northwestern and Purdue. He also attended a team camp at South Dakota. McWhirter had hoped to attend camp at Notre Dame and Nebraska, but was unable to, due to a hectic summer which included a week at a church camp. McWhirter was also slowed this summer by an injury suffered during track season.

McWhirter received scholarship offers from Minnesota, Colorado State, Michigan State and Iowa State and added an offer from Northwestern, accoridng to his father, Steve, who played at Nebraska from 1979 to '82. The family has sent out tapes recently to Michigan State, Purdue, Northwestern, Colorado, Kansas and Miami.

McWhirter attended the Iowa State-Baylor game and the Michigan State-Northwestern game in East Lansing. He has been to several Minnesota games, including Saturday's contest versus Michigan State and will go on his official visit to Minnesota December 2nd.

McWhirter was named All-Conference, defensive MVP, and all-state honorable mention as a junior.

McWhirter put the shot, threw discus and ran the 100- and 400-yard dash and competed on the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relay this past season.

McWhirter is undecided about a college major, but is considering business or criminal justice.
