Josh Robertson becomes Gophers' 20th verbal

Josh Robertson, a 5-foot-11, 175-pound cornerback from Lackwanna (PA) CC, has committed to Minnesota after visiting the campus this past weekend, according to his head coach Mark Duda. Robertson was expected to visit Kansas State after his visit to the Twin Cities, but decided to cancel the trip to commit to the Gophers.

Josh Robertson helped lead Lackawanna to a 7-4 mark this season. He returned two interceptions for a touchdown. He starred at Harrisburg (PA) Central Dauphin East and played as a freshman at Gardner Webb.

Robertson played at Central Dauphin East (Pa.) High under Coach Gerry Yonchiuk. He played both quarterback and defensive back as a senior. Robertson completed 81-of-145 passes for 1,249 yards and nine touchdowns and had over 2,000 yards of total offense and 22 total touchdowns. Robertson finished with 35 tackles as a defensive back.

Robertson was timed at 4.55 in the 40-yard dash in high school and was selected as a finalist for the prestigious Big 33 All-Star Game between Pennsylvania and Ohio.

Robertson was a preseason All-State selection as a senior and was an honorable mention All-State selection as a junior defensive back. He had five touchdown catches as a junior wide receiver. Robertson was also recruited by Bowling Green and Liberty out of high school.

As a true freshman in 2003 at Gardner Webb, he played in 10 of 12 games at cornerback and on special teams for a team that went 8-4 and was ranked in the I-AA top-25 for three weeks. He had seven tackles (three solo) and a pass break up. Robertson did not play in the 2004 season.

Head coach Mark Duda thinks that Minnesota got an excellent cornerback in Robertson.

"Coach (David) Lockwood did a good job with him. He was going to go to Kansas State for a visit if he did not like Minnesota. He liked Minnesota enough that he decided to not make the visit and commit. They are getting a hell of a player who can play at the Big Ten level."

"He is a great kid with a good attitude. He has great hips and a good change of direction."

Despite a lot of hype, Duda said that Minnesota had been active in Robertson's recruitment for some time.

"Minnesota saw him during the season and saw his tapes and were on him throughout the year. He had interest from East Carolina and West Virginia."

"He has great cover skills and is a good student. He has one more semester to go and will graduate in May."

Duda thinks that Robertson can step in quickly at Minnesota.

"He will go there and play. Unless they have someone up there wearing an "S" on their chest, he'll play. We've had 20 defensive back in the past seven years move on. He understands the game well."

Duda said that he became aware of Robertson from his former high school head coach Gerry Yonchiuk.

"Gerry said that he had great skills. Josh did not get here for spring practice, but moved in quickly."
