Five Walk-Ons Announced

In addition to signing 19 players to National Letters of Intent on Wednesday, the Gophers have five walk-ons who have already been accepted to the university. The Gophers are expected to add at least ten walk-ons to their roster.

Besides the 19 scholarships handed out and accepted today for the future of the Golden Gophers football program, five more players were announced as recruited walk-ons at Minnesota.

Brooks Albrecht of Hutchinson, a 6-2, 200-pound two-way player who is expected to start out at wide receiver for the Gophers, is one of four in-state prospects who will walk-on. He could also play defensive back or quarterback, two positions he played in high school. In 2004, Hutchinson lost to eventual Class 4A state champion Totino Grace in the state semifinals.

QB Ben Gaither of Wayzata (who was reportedly being recruited by San Diego State and Dartmoth), offensive lineman Belal Shouman (6-2, 255) of Lakeville North and offensive lineman Jimmy Snyder of Minnetonka are the other anticipated in-state walk-ons.

Also joining them is T.J. Wentzel of Emmetsburg, Iowa.

Shouman told early last month that he was "extremely interested" in joining the Gophers as a preferred walk-on.
