RB Curtis Herzberg Gets Midwest Interest

Curtis Herzberg, a 6-foot-2 running back from St. Agnes, was named honorable mention All-State the past three years. Herzberg rushed for 1,348 yards as a junior as he led the Aggies to a 5-6 record last season, losing to Goodhue 23-19 in the section finals. Herzberg attended the Minnesota Gopher camp last year and has received interest from several other Big Ten teams. GoldenSports.Net caught up with Herzberg's head coach, John Meldo, to find the latest on his standout's recruitment.

Curtis Herzberg rushed 212 times for 1,348 yards (6.4 yards per carry) this season with 18 rushing toucdowns. He caught 15 passes for 312 yards (20.8 yards per reception) for four scores.

Herzberg started the season out slowly as he failed to reach the 100-yard mark in his first three games. However, he broke out for back-to-back 200-plus yard rushing games with 23 carries for 218 yards and three touchdowns versus Onalaska (Wis.) High in a 30-20 win and 31 carries for 275 yards in a 39-34 loss to Breck.

Herzberg was limited to nine carries in their 47-0 loss to Concordia (Roseville) and 17 rushes for 69 yards in a 38-26 loss to Blake.

However, he finished the season with four straight efforts of 100 yards or more rushing. He had 21 carries for 124 yards in a 34-32 loss to St. Croix Lutheran. He had an 80-yard reception score and a 50-yard fumble recovery touchdown in that game. Herzberg had 10 carries for 105 yards in an easy first-round playoff 39-0 win over Randolph, 27 carries for 185 yards in a 41-17 second-round victory over West Lutheran and 32 carries for 149 yards in their season-ending loss.

St. Agnes head coach John Meldo said that Herzberg is hearing from Louisville, Illinois, Northwestern, Indiana, Minnesota and Iowa and recently received a letter from Florida State.

Meldo said that Herzberg attended the Minnesota football camp last season, but is uncertain where he will attend this summer.

"He has not decided on a camp. He'll probably attend Minnesota or Iowa, possibly as a one-day camp."

Meldo said that Herzog has added 10 pounds since last season.

"He wants to get up to 220 pounds."

Meldo said that Herzberg bench pressed 185 pounds 12 times and has run a 4.7 40-yard dash. He ran a 4.8 40 at the Gopher camp.

Herzberg was averaging 8.1 points per game on the Aggies' basketball team this season before deciding to sit out the rest of the year, due to tendinitis in his knee. Unfortunately, this writer was not aware of the injury before sitting through St. Agnes' 96-46 loss to Marantha Saturday.

Herzberg rushed for over 1,200 yards as a sophomore as he paced the Aggies to a 3-7 mark.
