David Gilreath Attracts Gopher Interest

David Gilreath, a 5-9 1/2, 155-pound junior wide receiver from Robbinsdale (MN) Armstrong, is considered one of the top football prospects. Gilreath saw his stock rise with a strong showing at the Nike Camp in Iowa City and has offers from Minnesota, Iowa and Iowa State. GoldenSports.Net caught up with Armstrong coach Derek Fisher to find the latest on Gilreath's recruitment.

As a junior, in 10 games David Gilreath caught 48 passes for 702 yards and tacked on 15 touchdowns for Minneapolis Washburn. He also rushed for 150 yards and one touchdown. Gilreath also had two kick returns for touchdowns. He was first-team all-conference and first-team all-metro. Gilreath was also honorable mention all-state.

Gilreath transferred to Armstrong after the football season. Armstrong football coach Derek Fisher is looking forward to having Gilreath on the field as much as possible.

"We're definitely going to keep him at wide receiver. We'll use him on kickoff returns and some at defensive back. We want to get him as many touches as we can," Fisher said.

There has been some talk about Gilreath committing soon to Minnesota, but Fisher thinks that might take a little more time.

"He has not said he was going to verbal to the Gophers. He has not talked about that yet. He has not decided on what he is going to do yet," Fisher said.

Fisher said that Gilreath is not sure of his football camp schedule.

"A lot of schools want him to come. He typically goes down to Florida in the summer. He has relatives down there and goes down there for a few months."

Gilreath, who ran a 4.39 40-yard dash at the Nike camp, is not running track for Armstrong, but is instead playing baseball, according to Fisher.

"He's doing pretty good. He went to state in track last year, but tried out for baseball and made the varsity. I talked to the coaches recently and they are impressed with his work habits.

Armstrong finished just 2-7 last season with a young team and is expected to rebound this season with the development of their players and the addition of Gilreath.

Gilreath has scholarship offers from Minnesota, Iowa, Iowa State and interest from Wisconsin, Ohio State and Indiana among others.
