Minnesota Teams Shine in Las Vegas

The Minnesota teams in Las Vegas have been able to beat the 100 plus degree tempatures to show that the North Star State can play some pretty good basketball. College coaches from some of the top programs from across the country have been watching the Minnesota AAU teams play in the Big Time and adidas Super 64 Tournaments.

Minnesota Magic Elite is 2-1 after their 79-61 victory over Branch West Team Reebok. Blake Hoffarber has been the top scorer, averaging 18.3 points in three games. Eric Carlson has also scored in double figures in all three games, averaging 14 points per contest. Gopher commit Al Nolen has reached double figures twice and is contributing 10.7 points. Jon Leuer, who has attracted the most recruiting attention, has not yet found his stride, but is averaging nine points.

Minnesota Magic Elite faces the New Jersey Roadrunners at 11:40 in playoff action.

Two former Minnesota AAU standouts are playing for out-state teams in Las Vegas.

Cole Aldrich is playing for Fox Valley Skillz (WI). He had a 20-point effort and is averaging 14 points and 10.7 boards. Trevor Mbakwe sandwiched a 19-point game between a zero and three-point effort.

43 Hoops 16-and-under team won the Hoosier Shootout earlier this month and is off to a 2-0 start in Las Vegas, going into playoff action. They face the Compton (Calif.) Magic at 9 p.m. Monday. 43 Hoops is led by Anthony Tucker, a 6-4 guard from Minnetonka, who has been closely watched by Gophers head coach Dan Monson and could get an offer soon.

Grassroot Hoops, a team led by former Minnesota prep school players, is 3-0 in the Big Time Tournament and faces Arizona Magic Blue at 2:20 p.m. on Monday. They are led by A.J. Wilson and Deonte Roberts.
