RB Chris Atkins Gets Recruiting Interest

Chris Atkins, a 5-foot-9, 199-pound running back from St. Paul (MN) Johnson, is one of the state's top rushers and has received interest from several Division I teams, including Minnesota. GoldenSports.Net recently caught up with Atkins to learn the latest on his recruitment.

Chris Atkins rushed for 1,452 yards (7.5 yards a carry) and 21 touchdowns last season as the Governors finished 10-1, losing at Stillwater in the Section 3AAAAA championship game. Atkins told GoldenSports.Net that he is hearing from Iowa, Iowa State, Northern Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Notre Dame and North Dakota State.

Atkins attended the Iowa State football camp this summer and was invited to the Notre Dame and Iowa summer.

Atkins is carrying more of the offensive load this season with the loss of star quarterback Freddie Coleman, who is at North Dakota State on a basketball scholarship. However, Atkins showed last year that he can be a workhorse with Coleman out of the lineup. Coleman missed Johnson's third game of last season to attend his brother's wedding. Atkins finished with a career-high 295 yards rushing on 28 carries against St. Paul Central. He scored on two 10-yard runs and threw a 33-yard pass to wide receiver Sal Simmons for another touchdown in Johnson's 34-7 victory.

Atkins rushed 23 times for 111 yards with three scores in their 39-28 win over South St. Paul Friday as the Governors improved to 2-0 this season.
