Minnesota-Long Island BB Preview

The Minnesota Gophers hope to improve to 2-0 as they face Long Island (1-0) Friday night at Williams Arena. The Blackbirds won their season opener Saturday 73-59, defeating Bighmaton at home. Long Island returns all five starters from a team that finished 12-16 overall and 9-9 in the Northeast Conference. The Gophers defeated Long Island in their lone meeting.

James Williams, a 5-foot-10 senior guard, was a first team All-Northeast Conference selection last season as he averaged 16.6 points and 3.3 assists per game last season. He will become the team's all-time leader in three pointers made later this season. Williams scored 17 points in the season opener. However, he was just five of 16 from the field.

Aubin Scott, a 6-foot-2 senior guard/forward, was the team's leading rebounder as he averaged 6.6 rebounds per game along with 9.6 points. He shot 61.5% from the field last season after making only 38% in his first two seasons. Scott had eleven points and nine caroms in the opener.

Tyrone Mattison, a six-foot sophomore guard, made just 36.5% from the field last season, but scored 13 points on five of nine shooting in the opener.

Paulius Morkeliunas is a 6-foot-7 junior forward who is originally from Lithuania. He shot just 35% from the field in his first two seasons, but he was four of six as he scored twelve points in the opener.

The Blackbirds were outrebounded 1-7 in their opening win and with only one starter over 6-foot-5, rebounding will be critical, if they hope to spring an upset.
