TE Matt Veldman leads Becker to Prep Bowl

Matt Veldman, a 6-foot-7, 225-pound tight end from Becker, emerged this season as a college prosepect when standout Shane Potter was injured in the season opener. Veldman caught eight passes for 131 yards in front of Minnesota head coach Glen Mason, who watching Becker star receiver and Gopher commit Shane Potter. He has attended three Gopher home games and is getting interest from the Gophers.

Matt Veldman had a breakthrough game in the season opener versus Kansas City (MO) Rockhurst, which attracted the attention of the Gopher coaching staff, who was watching Shane Potter, who unfortunately suffered a season-ending knee injury in the loss. Veldman has attended the Penn State, Indiana and North Dakota State games this season at the Metrodome.

Veldman has received more attention with the loss of Potter, but has still managed to catch 17 touchdown passes as the Bulldgos are 12-1 and hoping to win their second straight Prep Bowl.

Veldman had three catches for 29 yards in a 14-7 win over Cambridge-Isanti and three receptions for 58 yards in a 35-3 victory over Buffalo. He caught two passes for 40 yards versus Big Lake in a 47-8 win and had two catches for 34 yards in a 42-7 win over Monticello. Veldman caught one pass for 11 yards and a score in their 27-13 win over Princeton.

Veldman attended the North Dakota State-Northeastern game earlier this season. Veldman said that the Air Force Academy has asked for a copy of his transcript. He is an excellent student with a 3.8 GPA and a 25 ACT score.

Veldman is also a standout basketball player for the Bulldogs and has played on the varsity the past two seasons. He is hopeful that Potter, who also plays on the basketball team will be ready to play during the season.

The Bulldogs won the Class AAA title with a 28-0 win over Albany in the Prep Bowl last season, giving Dwight Lundeen, in his 37th year as Becker head coach, his first state title after four previous second-place finishes. Becker finished last season 14-0 and have been ranked #1 in Class AAA all season. They finish the season Friday versus Glencoe Silver Lake.
