Minnesota to face Texas Tech in Insight Bowl

Minnesota will face the Texas Tech University Red Raiders in the 2006 Insight Bowl on Friday, Dec. 29 at 7:05 p.m. (CST) at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Ariz. The game will be televised by NFL Network.

"I would once again like to reiterate that we are extremely pleased to be going to Tempe to participate in the Insight Bowl, and we couldn't be more excited to be playing Texas Tech," said Gopher head football coach Glen Mason. "Mike Leach and the Texas Tech Red Raiders' success and their vaunted aerial attack will present a challenge and opportunity for Golden Gopher football. We look forward to our game on Dec. 29th."

"Texas Tech is a quality opponent and we are looking forward to the challenge of facing them in the Insight Bowl," said senior quarterback Bryan Cupito. "There is a lot of excitement and enthusiasm from our team knowing we are playing in Tempe, and the stakes have now been raised knowing we are playing such an explosive team."

"The way that we closed out the season was exciting for everyone affiliated with our program and now we will have one more test in facing Texas Tech," said junior linebacker Mike Sherels. "They are well known nationally for having a tremendous passing attack and we look forward to the challenge."

This year's Insight Bowl will mark the first meeting ever between Minnesota and Texas Tech.

The Gophers (6-6) will be appearing in their fifth consecutive bowl game for the first time in school history and this will also be the program's seventh bowl appearance in the past eight seasons. The Gophers will join Michigan, Ohio State, Purdue and Wisconsin as the only Big Ten teams to play in a bowl game in seven of the past eight seasons.

Minnesota has won three of its past four bowl games. The Gophers defeated Arkansas, 29-14, in the 2002 Music City Bowl, defeated Oregon, 31-30, in the 2003 Sun Bowl and won the 2004 Music City Bowl, 20-16, over Alabama before losing to Virginia, 34-31, last season in the Music City Bowl. The Gophers have also participated in the 1999 Sun Bowl and the 2000 Micronpc.com Bowl during head football coach Glen Mason's 10 seasons at Minnesota.

The Red Raiders finished the 2006 regular season with a 7-5 overall record and 4-4 mark in the Big 12 Conference.
