Westphal plays for his father Brad, who is the Menasha head football coach.
What made you make the decision to commit to Virginia after visiting the campus?
"I got along with the coaches and really liked it and felt that it was the place for me."
What made you decide to re-think things a bit?
"I just want to compare. I did not get a chance to do that since I made my decision so fast. I was supposed to go to Iowa last weekend, but I took the weekend off. I came here (to Minnesota) and really enjoyed it. The coaches and the team atmosphere is really exciting. I'm going to Wisconsin next weekend to visit there. I guess that I just want to compare what all the schools had to offer."
You have a previous relationship with Coach Meyer. Has that helped?
"Yes, because it gives me someone to talk to. Not just about coming to Minnesota, but the whole process. I have known him since I was little at Oskosh. It is nice to have someone like that in the coaching business. I can talk to him about what is right."
What are your strengths as a player?
"I would say my speed off the edge and my ability not only as a pass rusher, but I can play the run very well. I'd like to think that I can defend the run as well as rush the passer."
Are most schools recruiting you as a defensive end?
"Defensive end or outside linebacker. That is what Virginia wants me to play, outside linebacker."
What things are you trying to work on?
"I'd say my base block, trying to play against players that are bigger than me.
Have you thought much about camps yet?
"Probably the Virginia camp. I'd like to attend the Minnesota camp."
