CA Guard Klay Thompson Gets Gopher Interest

Klay Thompson, 6-foot-5 shooting guard from Rancho Santa Margarita (CA) Santa Margarita, shined in the recent adidas Super 64 tournament in Las Vegas and the Best of the Summer at Loyola Marymount. Thompson's father Mychal was a standout for the Gophers and was the top overall pick in 1978. GoldenSports.Net caught up with Thompson Wednesday to learn the latest on his recruitment.

Klay Thompson told GoldenSports.Net that he has offers from Pepperdine, Nevada, Santa Clara, Vanderbilt, Notre Dame, Creighton, Washington State, Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota and San Diego State.

Thompson led Santa Margarita to a 21-6 mark last season before being upset by Jordan 53-52 in overtime in the second round of the Division I AA southern section playoffs. Thompson said that they return four starters from last year's team.

Thompson is hoping to sign with a school in the early signing period.

"I plan on narrowing my list down and deciding on what schools to visit. I plan to make my decision after my last visit," he said.

Thompson said that he has been in contact with Minnesota assistant coach Saul Smith and assistant Vince Taylor watched his Double Pump Elite team lose to 43 Hoops (a Minnesota team that has one-time Gopher recruit Andrew Brommer) 64-62.

"It's a good program. They are on the rebound and they'll bounce back in a couple of years with Tubby there," Thompson said.

Minnesota got involved with Thompson late with the new coaching staff taking over, but he says that the Gophers are still in the picture.

"They got there a little late, but I still like them," he said.

Thompson, who said that he has no favorite yet, has a 2.8 GPA and plans to take the ACT next week.

Thompson said that after a busy July traveling with his AAU team that he plans to work on his individual game this month.

Thompson played baseball and football when younger, but just concentrated on basketball when he entered high school.

Thompson comes from an athletic family. His father, Mychal, was a standout for the Gophers and was the top overall pick in the 1978 NBA Draft. He averaged 20.8 points per game during his career and is still the team's all-time leading scorer and rebounder. Thompson is currently a broadcaster for the Los Angeles Lakers and a talk show host in L.A.

His mother is the former Julie Leslie, who was a high school star athlete in Ridgefield, Wash., and was a standout volleyball player at the University of San Francisco.

Mychel "Mykee" Thompson will be a freshman at Pepperdine and younger brother Trayce Thompson is a junior.
