Big Ten Has Three in Preseason Top Ten

The Big Ten has three programs appearing among the top 10 in the preseason USA Today Coaches' Poll, more than any other conference. Michigan topped the Big Ten at No. 5 nationally, followed by No. 7 Wisconsin, No. 10 Ohio State and No. 18 Penn State. The Big Ten was one of only two conferences to boast four or more top-20 programs along with the SEC.

Michigan received a pair of first-place votes to rank fifth in the preseason coaches' poll, behind No. 1 Southern California, No. 2 LSU, No. 3 Florida and No. 4 Texas. Michigan was chosen as the conference's preseason favorite by media members attending the Big Ten football media days at the end of July, followed by Wisconsin and Ohio State. All three programs ended last season among the top 10 in both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches' polls, giving the Big Ten three top-10 teams in the final polls for the third time in the last five years and just the fourth time in the last two decades.

Penn State, who ended last season with a win over Tennessee in the Outback Bowl, were ranked 18th in the preseason poll to give the Big Ten four teams among the top 20. Iowa also received votes in the initial poll.
