Verdell Jones Gets Visit from Tubby Smith

Verdell Jones, a 6-foot-4 point gaurd from Champaign (IL) Central, received a visit from Minnesota head coach Tubby Smith and assistant Vince Taylor Thursday night. Jones is the No. 4 uncommitted point guard, according to The Gophers are looking for a point guard for the Class of 2008 with Nathen Garth recently decommitting from Minnesota and verballing to New Mexico.

Verdell Jones is getting interest from Minnesota Gonzaga, Connecticut, Texas, Kansas, Virginia, Kentucky and Oregon. Jones plans to visit the Kentucky Wildcats for their Midnight Madness.

Minnesota head coach Tubby Smith and assistant Vince Taylor watched Jones in an open gym in Chicago Thursday. The Gophers have watched Jones closely in the past few months. He is a standout for the Ft. Sooy No Limit AAU squad, which is coached by his father. Jones reminds some observers of former Ft. Sooy star Shaun Livingston, who is now with the Los Angeles Clippers, due to his thin frame and playmaking skills.

Jones was expected to play with his AAU team in the Reebok Summer Championship, but Ft. Sooy pulled out of the tournament.

Champaign Central is expected to be one of the top teams in the state of Illinois this season. Their season ended with a 79-64 loss to Bloomington in the playoff as Lonnie Lawrence scored 32 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, ending the Maroons' season.
