Juco RB Maurice Greer commits to Minnesota

Maurice Greer, a 5-foot-11, 205-pound sophomore running back from Garden City (KS) CC, has committed to Minnesota after visiting the campus this past weekend, according to sources close to his recrruitment. Greer attended Denver (CO) Mullen, the same school as current Gopher freshman Clint Brewster and Kyle Theret.

Maurice Greer finished with 778 yards on 170 carries (4.6 yards per carry) and 14 rushing touchdowns. He caught eight passes for 42 yards and also scored on a two-point conversion. Greer led the Broncbusters to a No. 17 ranking in the NJCAA and a 7-3 overall mark.

Greer had long been considering Minnesota and several Gopher fans had made note of his MySpace page, which indicated months ago that he was coming to Minnesota.

Greer was a two-time first-team all-state selection and rushed for 2,098 yards and 31 touchdowns during his senior season while helping lead Mullen to a Class 5A state title.

Greer committed to homestate Colorado, but was forced to go the juco route after failing to qualify academically.

Greer missed the 2006 season after being diagnosed with testicular cancer.

Greer is expected to give the Gophers depth at running back with Amir Pinnix graduating and Jay Thomas having offseason knee surgery. Minnesota has also received a commitment from high school running back Shady Salmon from Cretin Derham Hall.
