Devoe Joseph is a Gopher Get

Devoe Joseph, a 6-foot-3 guard from Ajax (ON) Pickering, has committed to Minnesota, according to Grassroots Canada AAU coach Ro Russell. Russell said that Joseph picked Minnesota over runner-up Texas, third-place Vanderbilt and fourth-place Virginia Tech. Joseph is the fifth addition for new head coach Tubby smith and his staff

Devoe Joseph shined this spring as a member of the Grassroots Canada AAU program, leading them to the Pittsburgh Jam Fest. This event caught the eye of new Minnesota head coach Tubby Smith, according to AAU coach Ro Russell. Minnesota was one of the first schools to show interest in the talented Canadian, which was a big factor in the Gophers landing the talented guard said Russell.

"It was a combination of things. Most important was to get to know Coach Smith really well. They were in early in the recruiting process and the family felt very comfortable with the staff. After he shined in Pittsburgh, Coach Smith came up the next day. He came twice in April, twice in July and twice in September," Russell said.

"He was comfortable and familiar with the coaching staff from Day 1. Coach Smith and Coach (Vince) Taylor did a good job recruiting him. Coach Smith has had success with foreign players and getting players to the NBA."

Russell said that Joseph thinks he can help the Gophers right away as a scoring point who can play both guard spots.

"He can help build a program with a coach who had success elsewhere," Russell said.
