Verdell Jones Leads Maroons to Section Semis

Verdell Jones, a 6-foot-4 point guard from Champaign (IL) Central and who visited Minnesota earlier in October, had 22 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists to lead the Maroons to an 81-69 win over #1 seed Centennial Friday with Tubby Smith in attendance. Central faces Normal West (16-14) in the Mount Zion Sectional semifinals Wednesday. Jones is considering Minnesota, Kentucky and Tennessee.

Verdell Jones is the No. 2 uncommitted point guard, according to Jones is averaging 17.6 points, 6.6 assists, 4.9 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game as he has led the Maroons to a 21-7 mark. Jones has shined, despite injury problems. Despite playing with two broken fingers earlier this season, he managed to score 28 points in a loss to LaFlore (Ala.). Jones bounced back from an ankle injury to score 11 points in the season finale versus Danville.

Tennessee landed 6-foot-1 Daniel West of Saginaw High (Mich.) earlier Tuesday, so that might be out of the mix, helping the Gophers' chances.

If Central beats Normal West tonight, they will face the winner of Decatur Eisenhower-Springfield Lanphier game, which will be played tomorrow, Friday night.

Eisenhower is 27-0 (ranked #1 in the state in Class 3A) and is led by Purdue commitment Lewis Jackson, who had gotten some interest from Minnesota. Six-foot-8 Jeremy Robinson is headed to Illinois State. Robinson had 29 points and Jackson had 27 in thier 94-92 win over Southeast Friday.

Lanphier is 18-10 after beating rival Springfield for the third time this season.
