Verdell Jones Scores 16 in Playoff Win

Verdell Jones, a 6-foot-4 point guard from Champaign (IL) Central who visited Minnesota earlier in October, had 16 points to lead the Maroons to a 64-44 win over Normal West Wednesday in a game that was puhed back due to inclement weather. Jones, who is considering Minnesota, Kentucky and Tennessee, will play Friday versus the winner of Thrusday's Decatur Eisenhower-Springfield Lanphier game.

Champaign Central trailed 8-7 after the first period and led just 18-14 at halftime. However, the Maroons open up their offense in the second half, outscoring Normal West 23-12 in the third quarter and 23-18 in the final period.

Verdell Jones is the No. 2 uncommitted point guard, according to Scout.com. Jones is averaging 17.6 points, 6.6 assists, 4.9 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game as he has led the Maroons to a 22-7 mark. Jones has shined, despite injury problems. Despite playing with two broken fingers earlier this season, he managed to score 28 points in a loss to LaFlore (Ala.). Jones bounced back from an ankle injury to score 11 points in the season finale versus Danville.

Tennessee landed 6-foot-1 Daniel West of Saginaw High (Mich.) earlier Tuesday, so that might put them out of the mix, helping the Gophers' chances.

Eisenhower is 27-0 (ranked #1 in the state in Class 3A) and is led by Purdue commitment Lewis Jackson, who had gotten some interest from Minnesota. Six-foot-8 Jeremy Robinson is headed to Illinois State. Robinson had 29 points and Jackson had 27 in their 94-92 win over Southeast Friday.

Lanphier is 18-10 after beating rival Springfield for the third time this season.
