Verdell Jones Gets 20 in Front of Tubby Smith

Verdell Jones, a 6-foot-4 point guard from Champaign (IL) Central who is considering Minnesota, had 20 points to lead the Maroons to a 65-63 upset over Decatur Eisenhower in the Mount Zion Sectional finals. Eisenhower entered the game 29-0 and ranked #20 in the country by USA Today. The game attracted Minnesota head coach Tubby Smith and assistant Vince Taylor, whose team plays Illinois Saturday.

Champaign Central trailed 52-42 going into the final period, but outscored Eisenhower 23-11 in the last eight minutes of the game for the upset win.

Verdell Jones, who is one of the country's top unsigned point guards, scored 20 points to lead the Maroons. Donald Stewart had 13 points and Zander Culver added 12 points.

Purdue recruit Lewis Jackson, scored 32 points to lead Eisenhower. He made four three-pointers. Illinois State signee Jeremy Robinson added 16 points, but no one else scored more than six points in the loss.

The Panthers fell to 28-1 in the loss. They defeated Champaign Central earlier this season 90-80.

Eisenhower beat Springfield Lanipher Thursday night in a game that was originally scheduled for Wednesday, but was pushed back a day when the Champaign Central-Normal West contest, which was scheduled to be played Tuesday, was postponed due to inclement weather. This meant that Eisenhower had to play on consecutive days.
