Verdell Jones Leads Maroons Versus Mt. Vernon

Champaign Central, led by 6-foot-4 guard Verdell Jones, who is getting Minnesota interest, will face Mt. Vernon in the Springfield Class 3A Supersectional Tuesday night. Jones had 20 points to lead the Maroons to a 65-63 upset over previously unbeaten Decatur Eisenhower in front of Minnesota head coach Tubby Smith and assistant Vince Taylor Friday.

Mt. Vernon (18-11) has won six straight games. The Rams came back from 16 points down in the fourth quarter against Marion in the regional semifinals to win 61-60 in double-overtime.

Central earned its first supersectional berth since 1969 by defeating Danville 88-47 and Champaign Centennial 81-69 in the Urbana Regional before beating Normal West 61-59 in the Mount Zion Sectional semifinals and beating Eisenhower in the finals.

Mt. Vernon is led by seniors E.J. Randolph and fellow senior Truvaunty Badger. The Rams are in the round of 16 for the 12th time in school history and are looking to make it to the state semifinals for the first time since the 1953-54 season, when Mt. Vernon last won a state championship.
