Verdell Jones Scores 15 in Semifinal Loss

Verdell Jones scored a team-high 15 points, but it was not enough as Champaign Central fell to two-time defending champ Chicago Simeon 51-46. The Maroons led 38-28 with 7:28 left in the game, but turnovers and foul troubles sealed their fate. Center Keith Biggers fouled out with 4:12 left and a 42-36 lead and Jones fouled out with 39.7 seconds left.

Verdell Jones made three of nine shots from the field and nine of ten from the line. He had three rebounds and two assists, but had five turnovers. He had a spectular drive to the hoop to finish the third quarter.

Champaign Central led 44-38 in 3:43, but turned the ball over three straight times and did not get a field goal attempt off until there was just 43 seconds left. Simeon scored 13 points straight to go up 51-44 before Patrick Wampler's putback basket with one second left.

Donald Stewart had 13 points for the Maroons, but did not score in the second half. Bigger had 12 points.

Stan Simpson, who got Minnesota recruiting interest, led Simeon with 16 points. Lazeric Jones made several strong drives to the hoop and finished with 14 points, double his scoring average. Kenyon Smith added 10.
