Simoni Lawrence Ready To Be A Gopher

Simoni Lawrence, a 6-foot-1, 215-pound safety from Valley Forge Military Academy (PA) JC, who signed with Minnesota in February, attended the Gopher spring game. GoldenSports.Net caught up with Lawrence to learn more on his becoming a Gopher and his expectations for the upcoming season.

Simoni Lawrence started two seasons at Valley Forge Military Academy, where he was twice named the Seaboard Football Conference Player of the Year. Lawrence had 107 tackles and 10 interceptions as a freshman in 2006. He picked Minnesota over offers from Brigham Young, Pittsburgh, Temple, Utah and West Virginia.

Lawrence shined at Upper Darby High School, where he rushed for 3,217 yards during his career. He had 2,136 yards on 315 carries and scored 26 touchdowns as a senior to earn first-team Class AAAA all-state honors.

Lawrence had hoped to graduate junior college to get an early start on his Gopher career. However, he will graduate May 16th and enroll in summer school June 16th. Although Lawrence would have liked to play in the spring game, he does not believe that it will set him back much.

"I never really played spring ball, so it shouldn't be much of a problem," he said.

Lawrence said that hopes to make a strong impression when he hits the practice field.

"I expect to come in and work hard and if I do that, things will be fine," Lawrence said. "Definitely, I wish that I could have played in the spring game, but I'll be ready."
