Sabes Invitational Day Three Recaps

The Illinois Warriors won the 17-and-under Sabes Invitational crown and K.C. Pump N Run won the 16-and-under title. The following is a recap of Sunday's action.

17-and-under Playoffs


Chicago Demons 65, Howard Pulley Black 62

The Demons lost to Howard Pulley 79-30 Saturday and trailed by 13 points before rallying for a huge upset. Chris Eversley paced the Demons with 17 points and Christian Bryd added 12.

Royce White led Pulley with 17 points. Seantrell Henderson had 12 points and Rodney Williams added 11. Marcus Williams scored eight and Cedric Martin and Mike Fitzgerald had five points each. Mike Broghammer and Dylan Hale scored two points each.

The Warriors trailed 40-39 as Dixon scored 22 in the second half. They switched the taller and longer D.J. Richardson to guard Dixon, holding him to just seven points in the second half. The Warriors led 54-51, but used back-to-back three-pointers from Thomas and Brown to go up by nine, a lead they would never surrender.

Championship Game

The Illinois Warriors jumped out to a 58-38 hafltime lead as they made nine first-half three-pointers en route to a 107-72 win over STP Grassroots. David Brown continued his strong play with 17 first-half points, including four three-pointers. Jeremy Jones and Lawrence Thomas combined for 20 first-half points and five three-pointers.

Brown finished the game with 23 points on six three-pointers. Thomas added 23 points and Jones had 20 points. Delino Deer had 12 points and Clay Tormey scored 10. D.J. Richardson added eight points.

Brook had 22 points for STP. John Bright and Jordair Jett added 13 points each.

Brown was my choice for 17-and-under MVP. He recently received offers from Oklahoma State and Bradley.

16-and-under Semifinal and Finals

K.C. Pump N Run defeated Howard Pulley Black 76-61 to win the 16-and-under title. K.C. Pump N Run trailed 39-34 at halftime, but outscored Pulley by 19 points in the second half.

Trevor Releford made five three-pointers as he finished with a game-high 26 points to lead K.C. Pump N Run. Rodney Givens scored 12 of his 17 points in the second half.

Hopkins duo D. J. Peterson scored 16 and Marvin Singleton had 14 points for Pulley.

Pulley advanced to the finals with a 77-48 win over ECI Elite. Steve Tecker and Marcus Alipate had 17 points each and Peter Crawford added 12.

K.C. Pump N Run edged Illinois Warriors 56-55 to move onto the finals.

Releford, who was the MVP of the Jayhawk Invitational, gets my vote for 16-and-under MVP of the Sabes Invitational. His older brother, Travis is headed to Kansas, and he is hearing from Missouri, Missouri State, Wake Forest and Kansas.
