Malik Story Gets Call From Tubby Smith

Malik Story, a 6-foot-5 senior wing who recently de-committed from USC, continues to draw interest from several top programs, including Minnesota, according to his high school coach William Middlebrooks. Story committed to the Trojans as a sophomore. GoldenSports.Net talked with Middlebrooks about the latest.

Malik Story averaged 13.0 points per game for Artesia as a sophomore and 14.7 points as a junior, helping lead them to a 66-3 mark in two seasons and two state titles. Story transferred to Mouth of Wilson (VA) Oak Hill Academy for his senior season, but left the program.

Story had hoped to play for Los Angeles (CA) Ribet Academy, but he was ruled ineligible due to the late transfer.

Ribet Academy was led by 6-11 Krys Faber, who signed with DePaul, picking the Blue Demons over Minnesota.

Middlebrooks said that three schools have stood out so far.

"Georgetown, Oregon and Wake Forest. Marquette made a little ground up. He wants to take three visits. Nothing is set yet. Everyone got transcripts today, so the compliance people are going through them," Middlebrooks said.

Middlebrooks said that Story is doing everything necessary to be ready academically.

He is one class away from being a full qualifier. He has an "A" in the class so far, but needs to take the final, which is 25% of the grade.

Story has a qualifying test score and his GPA will be good enough, if he passes the final.

Minnesota, which recruited Faber, has two scholarships available. However, they are actively recruiting Minnesotan Rodney Williams Jr. and need a big man, but Story is an intriguing prospect for the Gophers.

"Tubby (Smith) is on the phone with him and his father right now," Middlebrooks said during our interview.

GoldenSports.Net will have the latest on Story and all the Gopher recruiting news.
